Problem and Need

Researching trips to popular landmarks and destinations is a time and resource intensiveendeavor that requires one to look at countless pieces of information. We see a need foran all encompassing information app that can give people easy access to save time andeffort when planning and learning about and navigating their destinations.

There is also a need to visualize ideal spots and an assistant for photography. Peoplesometimes struggle and spend significant time finding ideal spots and camera positionsfor invaluable pictures. Some landmarks have an optimal best season. For example, placeswith seasonal nature changes, installations, or activities. We see a need to showcase thebest views. For example the Golden Gate Bridge without fog, or the Amazon Rainforestwith rain. Furthermore, historical and reference information, the best times to visit, or theyear a landmark was built are useful contextual pieces of information.

Finally, landmarks are places of social activity. People gather around famous landmarkslike museums, famous city parks, or university landmarks. We see Wanderlens as meetinga need for individuals to know about and how to navigate within landmarks through thehelp of reviews of their friends.

Additionally, according to the International Trade Administration “The U.S. travel andtourism industry generated $1.9 trillion in economic output” showcasing broad marketopportunities for informational services and experiences International TradeAdministration).

Proposed Solution

WanderLens acts as a tool to help people make the most of their experiences at landmarks, helping them see a landmark in a different time, the best view, or from the perspective of others. It’s an augmented reality app that runs on mobile devices providing users with information about a landmark or destination in view. The app has 3 key features: navigation to points of interest, a photography assistant, and historical/seasonal/time views. Users can also see the world of landmarks through the lens of their friends via recommendation overlays on the landmark. Friends may inspire them to visit or learn more about landmarks.

Project Limitations and Risks

●  Limited Information & Content Quality: Content overlays may not be available forall images, and image recognition may be limited without a specific data set orcellular/wifi. User recommendations are limited to user submissions.

●  Image Recognition Accuracy: Image recognition is subject to error. Objects maybe misidentified, or not recognized at all.

●  English Based App: All content is only available in the english language.

●  AR & Battery Life: AR is resource intensive and mobile users have limited battery.

●  Unknown Effects of the AR seasonal view: It is unknown if providing the augmented ‘best seasonal view’ will change users' FOMO and make them feelbetter or worse about not seeing the view in real time.

Risks/Tradeoffs

With the immense value add of the information overlays comes privacy, cybersecurity,safety and legal considerations.

●  Privacy: The app contains information on friends, location details (lat/longitudecoordinates of individuals home and their current location). Individuals withnefarious intentions could use this information to commit crimes. The AR app &camera may unintentionally identify others through image recognition.

●  CyberSecurity & Misinformation/Mis navigation: A hacked app couldmis-navigate the user to different landmarks, or in circles, or to dangerouslocations. It could also provide misinformation & false/fake overlayed information.

●  Distraction/Injury Looking at the AR view on the screen may distract users andresult in injury (Richards). In other AR apps like Pokemon Go users have injuredthemselves and even fallen down cliffs (Delzo).

●  Legal/Intellectual property. The source of the information and photos beingdisplayed on screen could be subject to copyright. There are also trademark,patent and liability considerations (Wassom).
